General Electric is committed to manage its plants and operations in a way that protects the health and safety of its employees and the public. To ensure success EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) had to become the way we worked at GE and part of the culture of the organization.

You will learn in this presentation how work place organization and management commitment were instrumental to transform the organization where safety is recognized by all employees as paramount. We will also demonstrate how our EHS culture has become a competitive advantage for General Electric and an important sales consideration for our customers.

Biography:

Bill Malus, General Manager Inspection & Repair Services, Canada/Northeast US

Bill graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1987 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering, along with a minor option in Management Science. After working as a Process Engineer and Project Manager at Tremco Limited, Bill joined GE’s Silicones business in 1990. Bill worked as a Design Engineer during the startup of a new silicones manufacturing facility located in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, and in 1993, Bill was named Plant Manager for this same GE Silicones site. Two years later, Bill became the business leader for GE Industrial Systems’ AC Traction Motor business. Bill earned his Six Sigma Master Black Belt certification in 1997 and was named Vice President of Global Operations for GE Multilin in 1998. Since 2003, Bill has been the General Manager for the Inspection and Repair Services business in Canada and the Northeast U.S.

Bill is an active member of GE Volunteers in central Canada and has been Chairman of the Board for the High Performance Manufacturing (HPM) Consortium since 2002 (he has been a member of the HPM Consortium since 1998). Recently, Bill was re-elected as Chairman of the Board for his second three-year term (www.hpmconsortium.com ). Since 2004, Bill has served as Vice President for the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) for the Canadian region. In addition, Bill has been a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario since 1989.
